Des
Whayman
Des is a retired Crayfishermen, who has worked for most of his life along
the wilderness coastline of Southern Tasmania. He is now in his mid-seventies.
Seven years ago he set up a marine farm, growing oysters, scallops and abalone.
Des went back to the coast to consider the meaning and value of his work there,
and determine what this wild, remote and spectacular coastline means to him.
This documentary is an account of that voyage.
Huey 'Monty' Penright
Monty is also a retired cray-fisherman, now in his eighties. He owns and runs
the Neptune, the fishing boat on which the voyage was made.
After a severe heart attack and against the advice of his doctors who suggested
he retire, Monty took to fishing. Before long he was lured around to the South
West coast and to Port Davey.
With a love of wild places, and of boats and fishing, Monty continues to make
annual trips around to Port Davey.
Mike Penright
Monty's son, Mike, is in his thirties. He started fishing with his father
when he was a boy. Last year he abandoned the industry out of frustration
with bureaurocratic changes and with increased charges.
He has been to Port Davey hundreds of times, and on this occasion joined the
trip to accompany the old men of the sea, Monty and Des.
