"Inspired by a short story's
sentiment of an old man who couldn't live within society after he lost his
wife. He spent all his time on the street, living only with a photograph
for memory. For 30 years, the only human contact was a 7 year old girl who
embraced his loneliness and gave him a balloon. On his deathbed, a nurse
goes through his belongings. It is the young girl with the balloon, now
grown up. She sorts his only possessions, the balloon and a picture of his
wife. She reflects in sadness and they embrace moments before he leaves
the world. While the story was very sentimental, it had a purity I was attracted
to. It struck me his trust of humanity had been broken and he was frightened
by the idea of getting close again to anyone, scared of love. This sad thought
plagued me."
